Selecting the Correct Bike Rack
Tips and Suggestions to get the right bike rack for your needs.
Before choosing a bike rack you will need one of
the following: A 1-1/4 or 2 hitch, Tire mount, R.V. bumper or Bumper
with ball mount.
For each of the above methods, you will need to know the tongue
weight capacity
prior to choosing your bike rack. The tongue weight is identified on
your hitch or bumper.
What is "Tongue Weight"?
Tongue weight is the downward push on a hitch or bumper for
example:
if your hitch or bumper states maximum tongue weight capacity of 200
pounds,
then the weight of the bike rack you choose plus the combined weight
of the bikes
you intend to carry must not exceed 200 pounds.
For Towing Applications:
If you choose a bike rack that enables you to tow, then you will
have to add the
tongue weight of your trailer to the weight of the bike rack plus
combined weight
of the bikes you want to carry. The total tongue weight must not
exceed the weight
load as stipulated on your hitch or bumper.
